What is Reiki? Everything You Need to Know

Just like aura healing and cleansing crystals, Reiki is having a big moment in the wellness world right now. And reiki is one of the most popular energy healing practices around! So, what exactly is reiki healing?

Reiki (pronounced “ray-kee”) is a Japanese form of energy healing used to promote a healthy flow of energy in your body. Reiki is based on the idea that we’re all guided by the same life force that aligns our mind, body, and spirit. When energy is allowed to flow freely in your body, it’s easier to tune into your higher self. However, it’s easy for this energy to become blocked due to things like stress, illness, and more. Reiki practitioners use a hands-on healing technique to sense where energy in the body is blocked and restore a sense of balance and harmony.

Reiki healing works by unblocking energy from three main places: your major organs, your chakras, and your meridians (energetic pathways). During a Reiki session—which can last anywhere from half an hour to two hours, you meet with your practitioner to discuss your desired outcome. There are different services available depending on what you’re looking to accomplish. For example, someone who wants to ease their anxiety would need something different from a client looking to boost their energy levels. It’s important to discuss these things with your Reiki healer before choosing a service.

What makes Reiki different from other energy practices is the attunement process itself. You can think of it as a transfer of energy from the practitioner to the client. Reiki masters work to remove the energy blockages from your body by lightly resting their hands on these major energy centers. Some Reiki healers use additional energy healing tools like aromatherapy, aura cleansing, and energy crystals during the session for an extra boost.

During a session, you’ll get comfortable, usually on a massage table or in a meditation room, and the practitioner will begin the session. To begin any Reiki healing session, you need to activate the energy within yourself. So, it’s likely you’ll be led through a short meditation once the session begins to help open your energy receptors. As you feel the flow of energy, try to keep your breathing nice and relaxed. It’s not uncommon to feel tingling sensations, warmth in your body, or even drowsiness once your session begins. Don’t panic! These are signs you’re aligning and attuning to what your body needs.

Some of the biggest benefits of Reiki occur shortly after the session ends. That’s why it’s a good idea to take things easy for at least 15-20 minutes following your session. Energy healing can be draining for even the most experienced spiritualists–so be sure to drink plenty of water and eat a snack if you can. This is also a good time to grab your journal and write some quick reflective thoughts about your session. What did you like? What feels different? Record your thoughts while they’re still fresh in your mind. Whatever you choose to do, find an activity that helps you stay connected to your newly opened energy centers.
