How to Prepare for Your Mediumship Reading

Loved ones who have passed aren’t gone—they’re still part of your life, and a mediumship reading offers a space to actively connect with them, ask questions, gain insights, and even find closure.

If you’ve never gotten a mediumship reading before, you might be surprised by how healing the experience can be. But it can be a little bit nerve-wracking to book your first reading. What do you need to know? How should you prepare?

First and foremost: don’t stress! The most important thing for you to do is simply to show up. There are no prerequisites, no required reading, and no homework for you to do ahead of time. The whole point of calling on a reader, after all, is that they’re the expert! They’re here to guide you through this process.

At the same time, if you want to make sure to get the most out of the experience, there are a few simple things you can do to prepare.

Your Intentions

The clearer you are—with your reader, but also with yourself—about your goals for the reading, the better your experience will be. Are you looking to connect with a specific person, or with several people? Are you seeking insight, comfort, guidance?

(Pro tip: we’ve found that it’s helpful if you write down a list of questions you’d like to ask ahead of time. In the middle of a reading, it’s surprisingly easy to forget to ask that one burning question you desperately wanted an answer to. Write it down!)

If you’re not totally sure what you want from the reading, take some time to think about it. Meditation and journaling can be a big help here. (But if you’re genuinely just curious about whatever messages come through, that’s okay too!)

There’s no guarantee that your reader can give you exactly what you’re looking for, but intention is a powerful thing, so set aside some time before the reading to tune in with yours.

Your Mood

A mediumship reading is like a conversation between you, your reader, and the loved ones you’re communicating with. The reader’s skills are only one factor in how it goes: your mindset matters, too.

You’ll get a much better reading if you’re feeling centered than if you’re stressed or preoccupied, so try to book yours at a time when you won’t be feeling frazzled. If that’s not possible (we get it, life happens!), taking a few minutes beforehand to breathe and clear your head will work wonders.

Your Environment

A huge benefit of getting a virtual reading, rather than an in-person one, is that you get to make sure you’re in a space that feels good for you. From the music to the lighting to the temperature of the room you’re in, you’re the boss, so take a few minutes before your reading to make sure everything’s just how you want it.

Where will you be sitting? There’s no wrong answer here: you might choose a couch, the floor, a chair at the kitchen table, or even your car (though make sure you’re in a spot with a solid internet connection!). The best place to choose is wherever you feel open and relaxed.

Some people like to have a blanket on hand, others a cozy cup of herbal tea. Some prefer quiet, others like to put on music. Maybe this is the time to light that fancy candle you’ve been saving!

Ultimately, the point is that everyone is different, so do whatever will best put you in a headspace to receive meaningful messages from lost loved ones.
