Learning to Trust Your Intuition

“Trust your intuition.” “Go with your gut.” Sounds nice, right? But like so many things, what seems easy on the surface can be hard to put into practice. We live in a weird and complicated world, and it can be hard to sort through all the messages we’re all being bombarded with every day. Is it intuition, or just wishful thinking? Intuition, or just regular old anxiety? How can you tell the difference?

The good news is that you absolutely CAN develop your intuition. Maybe you’ve always been a little psychic, or maybe you sometimes wonder whether you even have intuition! It doesn’t matter where you fall on that spectrum: everyone has intuition, and while some people might be more naturally in tune with theirs, listening to and trusting your intuition is a skill that we can all develop. Yes, including you! 

Getting Started

The best way to begin is simply to work on tuning into yourself. Pay attention to how different people, places, and decisions make you feel: happy and comfortable, or stressed and uneasy? Try not to overthink it! You might not be able to explain why you feel a certain way, but pay attention to the feeling anyway. This is your intuition trying to tell you something!

If you want to take things further, any personal reflective practices like meditation, journaling, or dream journaling—or even something as simple as taking daily walks (skip the podcast and keep your ears open to the world around you!)—will help you to get more and more aligned with your intuitive center. 

The more you reflect and tune into yourself, the more you’ll notice strong gut feelings, flashes of insight, or powerful urges to take a certain course of action. You may not know exactly where they come from—that’s because they aren’t logical! This is your intuition talking!

Passively noticing your intuition is one thing… but actively making choices based on intuition can feel scary at first! But when you let your intuition shape your actions, that’s where things start to get really good. Chances are, you’ll find that your intuition is an amazing guide. Over time, the more you act on your intuition, the more you’ll feel aligned and purposeful in your life—and the easier it’ll get to trust that inner voice. 

Just remember: while your intuition is ultimately all about you, that doesn’t mean you have to go it alone!
